Here’s My Story:

I went into business for myself in 2012 after a “corporate restructuring.” You know the lovely way they like to say they’ve outsourced your job and you’re laid off. Terrifying, but ultimately the best thing that could have happened. It wasn’t six months before our youngest was expelled from school, and someone had to be home 24/7 with him. So, I was there.

With the work I do, I was fortunate. I could work and handle the adventure that Terry brought. Terry, was born with Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS), and was diagnosed a month before his third birthday. With his expulsion it drove home the fact that a career where I had to play by someone else’s rules just wasn’t going to work when I never knew when I would have to run out for doctors, behavior issues, nudity or property destruction. —Yes, I said nudity, the call of ‘Your son has destroyed his clothes and is sitting on the floor in his classroom naked. Please bring a change and come get him.’ is one I just can’t make up.

In 2014, I declared it official and incorporated. Thankfully, we were able to get Terry into a school for individuals with special needs and those calls went away. Reports of the fire department having to come out and remove seat from the bus, because he didn’t want to go into school, and the police record he ended up with in another county because he decided to “quality test” the stop sign on a bus are another thing. Needless to say, I think you get the picture that our youngest determined the parameters of our lives and my business.

In April 2021, my world changed forever. Terry, passed away just weeks before his 19th birthday. In late 2020, Terry developed a dental abscess. We made countless calls, but it was during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and appointments were nearly impossible to secure. Hospitals and medical facilities were overwhelmed, and much of the population was either terrified or dismissive of the situation at hand.

By the time we finally scheduled the extraction, it was too late. Terry, overwhelmed, frightened, and in pain, refused to enter the hospital. The staff refused to assist us, and tragically, Terry passed away the next afternoon from heart failure caused by the untreated abscess.

I had a choice in that moment. I could allow myself to be consumed with anger and resentment toward the system that failed my son, or I could take that pain and turn it into something meaningful. I chose the latter.

Losing Terry made me realize how essential it is to show up as our true selves—in life, in business, in everything we do. Too often, we put on a facade, trying to fit into a mold or present ourselves the way we think others want to see us. Sometime, we even try to be invisible hoping no one really notices us. But it’s when we’re honest, vulnerable, and real that we make the most meaningful connections.
