5 Simple Tips To Improve Your Copywriting

copywriting, women writing at a deskIf you’re like me, copywriting ranks with balancing the books for activities to avoid. To make the task easier, I’ve been watching & reading a lot about copywriting. Here are a few tips that I’ve found that have improved my writing. I hope they do the same for you!

  1. Write to the reader. Talk to them & be reader-centric. Use you in your copy and try to limit me, we, us & I. Focus on what the reader is getting out of it – not what you do.
  2. Limit those adverbs! Make your writing concise and compact. Wordy copy takes too long to read & may cause your reader to click away.
  3. Use contractions. You want your copy to be personable. An easy way to achieve that is with contractions – it’s how we talk, after all.
  4. Avoid jargon. Those fantastic terms and abbreviations that no one not in the “know” knows. Ensure that your audience can understand what you are saying by avoiding jargon, and if you must use it – define it. Trying to find out something is frustrating when you get bogged down in technical speak. It’s a quick road away from your site.
  5. Check your grammar. Make sure your grammar and spelling are correct. A quick way to do that is with Grammerly.com. Their free plan is great. Do you want to dig deeper? Check out Hemingway & Slick Write.

I hope that you find these tips as helpful as I have.

Until next time!
